Thiruvananthapuram: BJP and Congress have to redesign their poll plank in Kerala with chief election officer (CEO) Teeka Ram Meena asserting that Sabarimala issue should not be used in religious context in the election campaign. He warns that strong legal action will be taken against those who violate his directive.
While Left parties have welcomed the direction, BJP and Congress aver that they will discuss all aspects of the Sabarimala issue.
However, Shashi Tharoor, Congress candidate in Thiruvananthapuram, welcomed the decision of CEO. “ Sabarimala is not a political issue. It is a religious issue and not to be discussed in the election campaign,’’ Tharoor said.
BJP state president Sreedharan Pillai said that the only thing is that the vote should not be solicited in the name of Lord Ayyappa, but all other aspects of the issue could be discussed. But the party’s young firebrand leader K Surendran that party will not heed the directive of the CEO.
KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran said that he needed time to study the directive, while opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said that he could not understand that under what circumstance CEO is saying that the Sabarimala issues should not be discussed in its totality in the election campaign.
